Flush Only Toilet Paper!
Heavier Items Can Cause Sewer Backups

Many of the issues involving sewer main backups in Spearfish involve the flushing of products such as Non-disposable and disposable wipes, rags, tampons, paper towels, and other heavy products. Only toilet paper should be flushed down toilets. Toilet paper breaks down in water and other alternative products mentioned above do not and can be the main cause for blockages that lead to sewer backups. Any product other than toilet paper should be placed in the trash and not down the toilet.

Common items flushed down the toilet that can lead to blockages include shop and paper towels, cleaning and baby wipes, napkins, cotton swabs, cigareete butts, and condoms. Such items should be placed in the trash.

Fats, Oils and Grease

The city of Spearfish Public Works Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) program was designed to reduce the possibility of sewer pipe blockages and overflows. To read more about this program and how you can help you can click here to download a PDF version of the program.

Inflow and Infiltration

Inflow, rainwater that enters the sanitary sewer and Infiltration, groundwater that seeps into the sanitary sewer can be a particular problem with private lines. Problems may result from improper plumbing connections, cracked sewer pipes, outdated piping materials, or the construction practices of the day.

Fix that Leak!

One leaking toilet can put hundreds of gallons of water a day into the sewer system. A 1/16″ diameter leak wastes up to 25,000 gallons a month. That is four times what an average household uses in one month. Please do your part and fix all leaks in your home.
